All of my life I have had the honor and privilege of living in Big Valley, the heart of Pennsylvania.

Rightfully named and affectionately known by all who dwell there.  The uniqueness of this valley is not only found in geographical structure and outstanding beauty of two close mountain ranges, but also in the uniqueness of its' people, whose close faith is demonstrated in daily living.

"It is the memories of my youth and constant rush of change that pushes me to preserve the daily life-style of the Big Valley Amish."

Daphne's academic credits include the Governor's School of Art, Bucknell University and she studied water color with Dr. Richard Hamwi, Penn State University.

Her art has won numerous awards in juried shows throughout  Central Pennsylvania and her work is displayed in many private collections across the country.

Largely a self-taught artist, it is an opportunity to share my love and respect of this valley with others through my art work.

O God, you have taught me from my youth; And to this day I declare Your wondrous works.

Psalm 71:17

Everyone's Dream

16"x20"

250 S/N - $100.00

50 S/N A.P. - $150.00

"Everyone's Dream" is a home that might be found in central Pennsylvania or any hometown.  It embodies the universal dream for warmth, safety and security.

The "dream" could be the peaceful setting of a house surrounded by a stream and mountains.  The "dream" could also be going on inside, perhaps a family dinner or celebration, or a meeting of Christians planning to build the first habitat house to fulfill someone's dream of owning their own home.

The purpose of Habitat For Humanity is to share through our Christian ministry the fulfillment of "Everyone's Dream" for decent, affordable housing.

This print by local Artist Daphne Krepps Marthouse is copyright 2004 to Habitat for Humanity of Mifflin County, and is being sold to raise funds for the construction of our next Habitat home.

"Younger ones in the front, older ones in the back."

During my childhood, I hear that simple statement declared often.  As second to the oldest of five children, it held a special meaning all of its own.  Being proclaimed older, definitely had its appeal, along with the freedom of independence from a watchful parent's eye, best of all, the comfortable seating.
Psalms 131:1-3
"LORD, my heart is not haughty, nor mine eyes lofty; neither do I exercise myself in great matters, or in things too high for me.
Surely I have behaved and quieted myself, like a child that is weaned of his mother; my soul is even like a weaned child.
Let Israel hope in the LORD from henceforth and forever."

Nancy is a second-generation doll that was first given to my youngest sister Regina.  She was adopted and "properly" named by our oldest daughter Lindsey years later.  Over time Nancy has been a consistent comfort and companion.  Typically her place of honor would find her tied with a shoestring to the front handle bars of a tricycle.  Is it any wonder that she has so much to "talk about?

Iverspringa In Coffee Run
1250 S/N $75.00
50 A.P. $125.00

In the late night hours of March 14, 1992, six barns were set on fire in a small Amish community in Central Pennsylvania, known as Big Valley.
Now in the morning light of March 31st men have arrived in literal bus loads.
Simply put in Amish terms, "Iverspringa" translates: as too much help - being over run.
The Amish have a way of taking things in stride, and are careful to humbly admit that God is the source of everything...everything in life.
Psalm 127:1
"Except the Lord build the house, they labor in vain that build it."

Nancy and Ted are out for a ride in their old convertible.  Although Teddy has reassured Nancy of his driving skills, she is not so sure.
In order to make a successful turn, and insure a continued enjoyable ride, clear communication is not only needed, but is definitely a good idea.
Proverbs 3:5-6
"Trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding.  In all of your ways acknowledge Him and He will make your paths straight."

"We figured out whose carriage it was you painted, but the horse was too skinny to be theirs."
Such is the conversation I often encounter in Big Valley.
